An extension can take the place where a hot-water unit or air conditioner once stood. Moving it around the corner may look simple until that corner is beside a bedroom, fills a garden path or needs a screen that blocks the unit's airflow. The effect reaches beyond the equipment itself.
We would put these elements on the first drawings for a Point Leo renovation or new home. Their location can influence which wall remains solid, where a garden door opens and how much space is left for planting. Resolving those relationships early helps keep the finished house both calm and practical.
Read the garden setting before choosing a hiding place
The Shire's 2019 Point Leo brochure distinguishes Bush Coastal and Rural Settlement settings. The Bush Coastal description emphasises dense coastal vegetation, lower trees and houses that sit quietly within it. The Rural Settlement descriptions allow a different relationship between simple house forms, larger garden spaces and retained planting.
The same brochure specifically identifies the visual effect of items such as air-conditioning, water tanks and storage in its Bush Coastal guidance. That is a useful design prompt, rather than a current permission or a reason to hide equipment at any cost.
Record the actual building, vegetation and surrounding windows. A side space that looks empty on a floor plan may be a tree's growing area, the garden's only practical access or an important outlook from inside. Consider the equipment position with those uses still visible.
Draw the space around the unit as well as the unit
Obtain realistic equipment dimensions and installation information while the plan can change. The drawing needs the selected system's operating clearances, access to connections and space for a person to work on it. A neat rectangle against the wall is an incomplete picture.
Hot-water equipment offers a useful example. YourHome distinguishes integrated heat pumps, with equipment on the tank, from split systems with a separate outdoor unit. Their physical arrangements and noise sources differ, so replacing an older cylinder should not rely on its footprint alone.
Compare retaining an existing service position with creating a deliberate space beside the proposed utility rooms. Include pipe routes and the effect on planting, paving and nearby doors. Moving everything to the most distant corner can create longer connections and difficult access without necessarily improving the house.
Protect quiet rooms on both sides of the boundary
Mark your bedrooms, study and outdoor sitting area, together with relevant neighbouring windows. Look at when equipment will operate and how its sound could reach those places. A high fence does not automatically shield a fan or compressor positioned above it.
YourHome recommends sensitive equipment location, suitable product selection and attention to vibration as well as airborne sound. Where the relationship is difficult, appropriate acoustic and installation advice can compare actual options before the architecture depends on a particular position.
EPA Victoria also identifies proximity, maintenance and equipment condition as factors in air-conditioner disturbance. Check the applicable noise requirements with the project team; a proposed screen is not proof that an installation will be acceptable. Do not solve one household's quiet-room problem by transferring it to a neighbour.
Let screening follow the operating needs
A short screen or wall return may interrupt the view from a garden without enclosing the equipment on every side. Compare it from the actual sitting position and street approach. Its height and position should follow both the visual question and the manufacturer's requirements.
Open battens can filter a view but should not be assumed to provide acoustic protection. A more solid enclosure requires careful design for airflow, access and sound. YourHome warns that obstructing airflow can create performance and maintenance problems; the screen cannot be detailed independently of the system.
Show plants at their mature size. A shrub that leaves the fan clear when first planted may later block it or close the service route. Allow a maintainable separation and choose the planting with the relevant landscape advice, including any property-specific vegetation or bushfire considerations.
Leave a route for the next replacement
Imagine removing the largest component after the garden is established. Can it pass the gate and corner without dismantling a terrace or damaging retained vegetation? A removable screen panel may help, but its opening and the route beyond it need to be drawn.
Keep necessary inspection points and connections accessible. Coordinate paving, drainage, support and exposure with the installers and building advisers rather than treating the equipment area as a decorative cupboard. Water-storage and other required systems may have additional needs that the same space cannot automatically accommodate.
