Test visibility as well as private views
A harbour outlook can be valuable, but a house is also seen from streets, neighbouring land and the water. Massing studies should compare how stepped forms, rooflines and planting affect both the private view and the wider landscape.
Keep trees and drainage in the same study
Tree retention, habitat links, natural rock and stormwater paths influence siting and excavation. A landscape and engineering strategy should be developed with the architecture rather than after the footprint is fixed.
Plan difficult access early
Steep drives, limited street frontage and restricted construction access can alter the feasible structural and material strategy. Early studies should test vehicle movement, safe pedestrian arrival, spoil removal and how the house meets each level.
